Abstract

Objective: Improving the current medical health care system is achieved by increasing the quality on research and this is managed by encouraging residents to develop interest in research beginning from the first years of the medical school. It is important to understand the attitudes of students and address their negative opinions for research, and to evaluate their anxiety. In this study, we aimed to assess the levels of anxiety related to scientific research and the factors that may be related to these factors among the residents working in a university hospital.

Methods: This descriptive study covered all medical faculty residents working at a medical school between October and December 2019. The sociodemographic characteristics of all participants were questioned and all medical faculty residents completed an anxiety scale that assessment the level of anxiety for research

Results: A total of 310 medical faculty residents were included in the study. The mean age of the participants was 28.3±2.6 years and 49.0% (n=152) of the participants were women. The mean score of the anxiety scale for scientific research in residents was 33.37 ± 9.27 and there was no difference between the participants in terms of gender (p = 0.666). The residents who were doing their residency on basic science compared to those working in other departments, those who had a less workload compared to those who had a more workload, those who thought of pursuing an academic career compared to those who do not think of becoming an academic, those who were satisfied with the department compared to those who were not satisfied with the department had a significantly lower level of anxiety for scientific research (p=0.023; p <0.001; p <0.001; p<0.001 respectively).
