Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to determine the frequency of using herbal treatment methods in people applying to a family health center, their reasons, their thoughts about herbal treatments and whether they consult a health professional for these treatments.
Method: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at Denizli 15 Mayıs Family Health Center between 01 February and 31 March 2024. Data collection was conducted in the form of a face-to-face survey for those who agreed to participate in the study. There are 22 questions in the survey. In the survey, participants were asked questions about their use of herbal treatments and their opinions about herbal treatments. The data were evaluated using IBM SPSS Statistics version 22 program.
Results: 200 people were included in the study. The average age of the participants was 42.8±15.9 years and 55% were female. It was found that 79.5% of the participants used herbal treatment. It was determined that 50.3% of the participants using herbal treatment used it to strengthen the immune system. The most commonly used herbal products are mint-lemon (57.8%), linden (56.6%) and mixed herbal teas (49.6%). In this study, the participants’ sources of information about herbal treatments were a family member and a relative with a rate of 65.4%, and the second most common source of information was internet use with a rate of 45.9%. Participants mostly prefer to buy herbal products from herbalists. It was found that 69.8% of the participants did not consult a doctor about the herbal treatment they used. It was found that the participants found herbal treatment highly reliable and generally recommended it to others.
Conclusion: In this study, it was observed that the participants used herbal treatment at a high rate. However, both in the study and in the literature, participants use herbal treatments without consulting doctors, which causes the unconscious use of herbal treatments. Considering that the number of people using herbal treatments is increasing day by day, it is important to use herbal treatments under the supervision of a physician due to their positive or negative effects.
